Name that City! April 24, 2023

Welcome back! We hope you are enjoying Name that City!

  1. The first Ferris Wheel was erected for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. What city played a crucial role in its creation?
  2. What city’s hockey fans stack beer cans in a tall tower against the glass during game-time?
  3. What city boasts the only replica of the Greek Parthenon?

And here are the answers:

  1. Pittsburgh, PA—The wheel was the brainchild of successful engineer and bridge builder George Washington Ferris, who owned G.W.G. Ferris & Company in Pittsburgh. The giant steel hammer needed for the forging was manufactured in Pittsburgh by Bethlehem Iron (later Bethlehem Steel). The wheel took 20 minutes to complete two revolutions, which cost each rider 50 cents.
  2. Cincinnati, OH—The beer pyramids lining the glass around the ice sit quietly and wait for the players to slam each other against the glass. When the pyramids tumble, the locals cheer loudly.
  3. Nashville, TN—Centennial Park is home to the replica. It was designed by Confederate veteran William Crawford Smith and built in 1897 as part of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition.

Thanks for playing!
