Name That City — September 17, 2020
Welcome back! We hope you are enjoying Name that City!
- The first ever shopping cart was invented in this city in 1937.
- In the early 20th century, this city was controlled by political boss Tom Pendergast.
- Although British-American Benjamin Henry Latrobe’s major work was overseeing construction of the United States Capitol, one of his best surviving domestic designs is located in this city.
And here are the answers:
- Oklahoma City, OK—Sylvan N. Goldman, owner of the Humpty Dumpty supermarket chain, invented the shopping cart prototype. Amazingly, the ultra-convenient invention wasn’t popular at first. Men thought it made them look weak and it reminded women too much of a baby carriage.
- Kansas City, MO—Pendergast directed the flow of illegal alcohol during Prohibition and rigged elections. This included hand-picking Harry S. Truman as the next US senator from Missouri.
- Lexington, KY—The Pope Villa in Lexington is one of the best surviving domestic designs.
Thanks for playing!
