Welcome back! We hope you are enjoying Name that Flyover City!
Today’s questions are in honor of Black History Month. Can you match the person with the city in which he or she was born?
-
American poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou was born in this city in 1928.
-
Professional boxer, activist, and philanthropist Muhammad Ali was born in this city in 1942.
-
American gymnast Simone Biles was born in this city in 1997.
And here are the answers:
- St. Louis, MO–Angelou wore a great many hats in her lifetime, including writer, singer, dancer and director. She wrote and delivered a poem, “On The Pulse of the Morning,” at the inauguration for President Bill Clinton at his request. In 2000, she received the National Medal of Arts, and in 2010 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
- Louisville, KY–“The Greatest” was born and raised in Louisville, taking up amateur boxing at age 12. Ali is the only boxer to be named The Ring magazine Fighter of the Year six times. He has been ranked the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, and as the greatest athlete of the 20th century by Sports Illustrated, the Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC, and the third greatest athlete of the 20th century by ESPN SportsCentury.
- Columbus, OH–With a total of 30 Olympic and World Championship medals, Biles is the most decorated American gymnast. And here’s one of the reasons why.
