  1. Memphis, TN–When Twain (aka Samuel Clemons) was a boat captain in 1858, he went to Memphis because his younger brother Henry Clemens had been injured in a steamboat explosion. After his brother passed from his injuries, Memphians sent an envoy to accompany Twain as he transported his body to St. Louis. In Twain’s recollections, he dubbed Memphis “The Good Samaritan City of the Mississippi.”From tragedy, a nickname was born. In Twain’s recollections, he dubbed Memphis “the Good Samaritan City of the Mississippi.”
  2. Madison, WI—Pleasant Rowland originally offered its American Girl products by mail order only. In 1998, they became a subsidiary of Mattel. The company has been awarded the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Award eight times.
