Name that Flyover City! — May 24, 2023
Welcome back! We hope you are enjoying Name that Flyover City!
Here’s a review of the questions about pioneering American women:
- Amelia Earhart was, of course, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Where was she born?
- Aretha Franklin was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Where did she hail from?
- Jane Addams was the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Do you know where she was born?
- Janet Guthrie was the first woman to drive in the Indy 500. Where was she born?
And here are the answers:
Atchison, KS–Ms. Earhart made the nonstop solo transatlantic flight in 1932, becoming the first woman to achieve such a feat. (In 1935, she was also a faculty member at Purdue University as an advisor to aeronautical engineering and female students.)
Detroit, MI–The Queen of Soul was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987.
Cedarville, IL–Addams was an American settlement activist, reformer, social worker and author. She co-founded Chicago’s Hull House, one of America’s most famous settlement houses.
Iowa City, IA–Born on March 7, 1938, Guthrie competed in the Indy 500 in 1977. The film “Qualified” explores the sexism and resistance she faced from fellow drivers, fans and the establishment, and how she won most of them over with skill, courage and perseverance.
